Power Systems Engineer

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Position Summary

The Power Systems Engineer supports the planning, analysis, design, and evaluation of electrical power systems for industrial facilities, commercial developments, utility infrastructure, and other power-related projects.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on ("doer") engineer with experience or a strong foundation in electrical power distribution, power system analysis, protection and controls, and electrical system design. This position works under the direction of senior engineers and project managers while taking responsibility for assigned engineering tasks, calculations, studies, and project deliverables.

The engineer will have the opportunity to work on a variety of power and industrial projects, develop expertise in power system analysis and design, and progressively take on greater technical responsibility as experience and capabilities grow.

Essential Responsibilities

Power Generation & Electrical Infrastructure

  • Support the design and evaluation of electrical infrastructure for industrial facilities, commercial developments, mission-critical facilities, and utility-related projects.

  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis related to electrical power generation, distribution, and utilization systems.

  • Support the design and integration of generators, UPS systems, energy storage systems, and other critical power equipment as applicable.

  • Assist with evaluating system reliability, resiliency, redundancy, and operational performance.

  • Participate in project coordination with senior engineers, project managers, clients, utilities, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.

Medium-Voltage Power System Design

  • Perform and support the design of low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems.

  • Develop and update one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, grounding plans, equipment layouts, cable routing, and power distribution drawings.

  • Assist with the selection and specification of:

    • Medium-voltage switchgear

    • Switchboards

    • Motor Control Centers (MCCs)

    • Transformers

    • Generators

    • UPS systems

    • Protective relays

    • DC power equipment

  • Perform service load calculations, equipment sizing, voltage drop calculations, and other electrical engineering calculations.

  • Review electrical equipment ratings and system requirements.

  • Apply NEC, IEEE, NESC, utility requirements, and project specifications to engineering work.

Protection & Controls

  • Support the development and evaluation of protection and control systems for electrical distribution equipment.

  • Perform or support relay coordination and protective device analysis.

  • Develop or assist with AC/DC control schematics and wiring diagrams.

  • Support generator, power system, and automation control applications.

  • Assist with PLC and automation control systems as applicable.

  • Support SCADA integration and utility interconnection requirements.

  • Participate in commissioning, startup, testing, troubleshooting, and field verification activities.

Power System Studies

  • Perform and/or support engineering studies, calculations, and analysis including:

    • Short Circuit

    • Protective Device Coordination

    • Arc Flash

    • Load Flow

    • Voltage Drop

    • Motor Starting

    • Harmonic Analysis

    • Power Quality Studies

  • Develop and maintain power system models using applicable engineering software.

  • Gather, review, and validate electrical system and equipment data required for studies.

  • Analyze study results and identify potential system issues.

  • Support the development of engineering recommendations related to system reliability, safety, and performance.

  • Prepare calculations, study documentation, reports, and other technical deliverables.

  • Develop and update electrical one-line diagrams associated with power system models as required.

Substation & Utility Coordination

  • Support engineering activities associated with medium- and high-voltage substations.

  • Assist with utility interconnection projects and coordination.

  • Review utility requirements and available system information.

  • Support the preparation of utility coordination packages and technical studies.

  • Assist with grounding design and analysis.

  • Coordinate technical information with utilities and other project stakeholders as directed by the project team.

Project Delivery

  • Perform assigned engineering tasks from initial project development through construction and commissioning.

  • Prepare engineering calculations, reports, technical specifications, drawings, and construction documents.

  • Participate in site investigations and existing system evaluations.

  • Support construction administration activities, including:

    • RFIs

    • Shop drawing reviews

    • Site observations

    • Punch list support

  • Coordinate with senior engineers, project managers, designers, contractors, clients, utilities, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

  • Manage assigned engineering tasks and deliverables while meeting established project schedules.

  • Communicate technical information, findings, and recommendations clearly to project team members and clients.

  • Perform quality control reviews of calculations, drawings, models, and technical deliverables.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, electrical distribution, industrial electrical systems, or a related field.

  • Working knowledge of electrical power distribution systems and electrical equipment.

  • Experience performing or supporting electrical engineering calculations and power system analysis.

  • Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams, electrical drawings, equipment data, and technical specifications.

  • Familiarity with electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, generators, protective devices, and related distribution equipment.

  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and industry standards, including NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and NESC.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.

  • PE license is preferred but not required.

  • EIT certification is preferred.
