George E. Whalen VA Medical Center EHRM Infrastructure
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs / Salt Lake City, Utah
This project included a campus-wide upgrade of telecommunications infrastructure to support the implementation of the Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) initiative. The scope included the design of new telecommunications rooms (TRs) in buildings across the Salt Lake City VA campus, along with the installation of a redundant fiber backbone in accordance with updated ISTS standards. Each TR was equipped with new racks, CAT 6A cabling, cable trays, power, UPS, grounding, HVAC, and associated controls.
Our team executed a coordinated design strategy with VA engineering, clinical staff, and management to integrate new TR infrastructure within active clinical environments with minimal operational impact.
The existing main computer room (MCR) remains the central data hub for the campus and surrounding region. It is equipped with a dedicated pre-action sprinkler system and continues to serve as the backbone of the upgraded network.
Spectrum Engineering completed this project before the merger.
