Logan City Library

Logan City / Logan, Utah

Logan City commissioned this project to upgrade the existing library and create a new city library space that would act as a central hub for the community. Working closely with the design team, our team provided the electrical engineering to provide power and lighting to meet the needs of the new $15.6 million library space.

Within the 3-story library, each level is designed primarily based on age-group interest. In addition to book shelving and reading spaces, the library includes gathering areas, multi-use meeting rooms, staff offices, and media and makerspace areas. A main feature of the library is the children's area which was designed to emulate nature with large, wooden tree art sculptures. The tween/teen level was designed with areas where teens can gather to read and play on a TV. There are also two patio areas on levels two and three with tree planters and views to the Logan City Plaza and Main Street.

For the electrical engineering portion of the work, the main design challenge was meeting the electrical and telecom needs of the building within the limited equipment space. Our team collaborated closely with the mechanical engineer to keep the building load service at 208V to eliminate the need for large step-down transformers. Lighting was also a challenge to balance the need to maintain light levels between the book stacks; all while providing a cohesive ceiling system that worked for both HVAC and lighting equipment. Additional creativity and problem solving was delivered to coordinate lighting and ductwork in the limited existing ceiling space.

Our services also included electrical engineering for the emergency/stand-by generator system, exterior site, building, and facade lighting design; as well detailed photometric calculations using Point-by-Point and Grey-Scale methods to achieve the optimum illumination levels for the building.

Envision Engineering completed this project before the merger.
