Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal Redevelopment

Salt Lake City Department of Airports / Salt Lake City, Utah

Our team began work as a select number of local engineering firms for this $5 billion project to construct a new international airport from the ground-up—one of Utah's largest construction projects ever. The 10-year project to construct an entirely new international airport terminal and concourses adjacent and within an active airport was a massive architectural, engineering, and construction undertaking.

Comprehensive, sustainable mechanical engineering services were provided for the concourses, terminal gateway, and parking structure—a total of more than 257.5 miles of mechanical piping.

Our comprehensive electrical engineering role included construction administration, in support of the architect, HOK, for the installation of all electrical systems to power the massive airport and its vital operations. We also designed fire alarm systems for all new airport buildings and provided full-service electrical engineering for the new 1-million SF parking structure, car rental quick turnaround facility, and car rental services building. We also designed all on-site medium voltage power distribution and telecommunication duct bank for both landside and airside facilities. Power and lighting design was also provided for the landside, except for the lighting design for the main roadway up to and directly in front of the terminal (performed by HOK).

Sustainable energy efficiency and reducing operating costs were primary goals for the Terminal Redevelopment project. Our team continuously innovated throughout the project and achieved LEED® Gold Certification for the parking structure. Features included converting all airline ground service equipment to electric and equipping the airport with energy-saving evaporative cooling towers. The automated baggage system beneath the airport was designed with variable speed motors to run in real-time rather than continuously, and lighting design incorporated daylight-harvesting LED fixtures throughout. Through our efforts, the project received local utility incentive monies.

Colvin Engineering and Envision Engineering completed this project before the merger.
