University of Utah Health HELIX Office Building
University of Utah / Salt Lake City, Utah
The $78 million HELIX (Healthcare, Educators, Leaders, and Innovators) building is a six-story, 250,000 SF office building for approximately 1,200 full-time University of Utah Health employees and 400 residents. The building features a 400-foot sky bridge extending over Mario Capecchi Drive to connect the HELIX with the Moran Eye Center and the general hospital campus across the street.
Our mechanical engineering approach for the HELIX Building centered on the use of heat pumps to extract beneficial heat from campus chilled water to heat itself and simultaneously produce chilled water for other buildings on campus. This effectively reuses the waste heat from other buildings that would have otherwise been exhausted and lost to the outdoors. This highly energy-efficient, integrated strategy significantly advances the University of Utah Health campus's sustainability goals.
